A full bolt is approximately 14” (width of a traditional Japanese loom) by 11-12 yards long. It is a substantial smooth fabric with great drape and a subtle overall look, with colors of blue, pumpkin and beige. Tsumugi (pongee, dupioni)  “tsu moo gee” kimono are worn in Japan for casual visiting, informal events, classes and the like. The are prized for their patterning which is woven in, rather than dyed afterwards. Tsumugi fabric can be nubby in texture, appearing quite rustic due to the uneven thread widths. It sometimes has the appearance of cotton, but usually feels softer, as it is often a blend of silk with cotton. Because the short threads are joined together so often, tsumugi fabric is time consuming to make.
